Background of my coaching work

In the late 20th century, advances in the domains of philosophy and biology transformed our understanding of the power of language and communication. These breakthroughs, influenced by the work of: Fernando Flores in language and action; Richard Strozzi-Heckler in the discipline of Somatic Leadership; biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela; continental philosopher Martin Heidegger and linguist John Searle form the foundation of what is called Ontological Coaching.

This work aspires to transform the basic way we understand and interpret both ourselves and those around us – it goes beyond simply identifying strategies and developing skills based upon leadership and management theories to facilitating the embodiment of new competencies through recurrent practices. This enables the client to move beyond the intellectual understanding to the development of new skills, the embodiment of new competencies. For example, you can read all the books ever written on the subject of public speaking and you may well get to fully understand the mechanics associated with speaking publicly – but it is only through getting in front of an audience and practicing speaking on a recurrent basis that you will truly learn to speak publicly and develop competence in this.

So, ontological coaching facilitates the embodiment of new competencies and lasting change. If we are willing to observe, question and change who we think we are, then Ontological Coaching is tremendously effective in developing our ability to take new actions by revealing new understanding of and development of new skills in the conversational, emotional, social, cultural and somatic worlds in which we live.
